With the onset of the pandemic, online education has seen a massive rise. The lack of physical interaction coupled with monotonous teaching practices makes the online learning process extremely challenging. Non-engaging content across badly managed platforms results in students remaining unmotivated and unable to achieve their academic — and otherwise — goals.
The future is online! Reading stacks of papers, and highlighting important sentences with markers seem like things of the past. Online education has radically changed the outlook of modern learning to become inclusive, comprehensive, and engaging.
Video conferencing, classroom management, chatting, and other services are all catered to by
different applications that render online education dependent on successful mediation across
them all. Teachers are bound to make use of these available resources — most of which don’t
provide any content creation or course designing facilities — and find themselves floundering to
successfully engage with their students.
The internet has revolutionized most industries including the Education sector. Studies show that the internet has become a favorite destination for students to learn. The rapid growth of the internet and mobile devices has made e-learning flexible, time-saving as well as cost-effective. Numerous learning websites, platforms, courses, and pages are replacing conventional traditional classrooms. EdTechindustry is expected to reach $680 billion by 2027, growing at an annual rate of 17.9%
Microlearning refers to e-learning in small doses, i.e. tiny bursts of training material that one can comprehend in a short time. The average person has an attention span of 90 seconds due to constant multitasking and bombardment of external information. The short lesson structure not only captures learners’ attention but also promotes efficient information retention.
These include participatory approaches, collaboration, self-guided study, completion of assignments, making assessments easier and much more. With its exploratory approach to learning, gamification helps in strengthening learner’s creativity, retention, motivation, and engagement.
VR, AR, and AI are changing the way we teach and learn. The future classroom will offer a hyper-immersive experience that will cater to an experiential learning environment through an entirely digital ecosystem. It would use text, sound effects, graphics, and multimedia to foster teaching and learning that closely mimics in-person interaction.
Through interactive learning, learners can also understand the impact/consequences of their decisions by offering branching pathways. At certain junctures of the videos, the learners’ decisions take them to different paths. This technique can help them practice the application of learning in a safe environment.
Learning analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis, and reporting of data about learners and their contexts. Learning analytics can provide data such as-
● when students study
● how they study
● where they study
● student feedback in questionnaires, assignments
● Video engagement
All these aspects allow educators to find the best way to engage their students in a way that suits them, measure key indicators of student performance, support student development, and inform institutional decisions and strategy.
